August 06, 2014 – Marc Garneau was invited to visit the Laurus Summer Camp to meet with parents and children. Julia Peterson, one of our summer interns, presented the results of the campers participation in the United Nations MyWorld 2015 survey. Children at the camp were invited to vote on priorities for the post 2015 UN development goals. The anonymous ballots were cast on the UN’s MyWorld 2015 web-based survey. The results from the Laurus Camp listed the following top six priorities for the post 2015 – development goals: a good education, better healthcare, affordable and nutritious food, access to clean water and sanitation, protecting forests, rivers and oceans and protection against crime and violence. The visit and discussion with children brought home the importance of our civic engagement with children and youth to inform elected officials.
The children asked questions about Marc’s experience as an astronaut and travel in NASA’s Space Shuttle. The children prepared a beautiful thank you poster that is on display in Marc’s office.
